“What is called a sincere work is one endowed
with enough strength to give reality to an illusion.”
-- Max Jacob, Art Poetique
Realities & Illusions feature eleven artists whose work transcends
the boundaries of traditional textile techniques. By experimentation
they have created pieces that are metaphorical, mythical and evocative.
Webster defines illusion as an erroneous perception of reality, a definition
that excludes myth and magic. In art and poetry illusion is inspired
by reality and is enhanced and embellished by creative imagination. Illusion
is an artistic interpretation of reality. Examples in this exhibit are
unwearable jackets that speak of myths and hang on the wall, abstract
tapestries expressing concern for the forests and woven in historic tapestry
technique, and use of digital technology, a computerized adaptation of
the 19th century jacquard loom.
My intent in assembling this exhibit is to explore the relationship
between reality and illusion and to introduce the viewer to the full
spectrum of contemporary textiles as an innovative art form.
