St. Louis, MO- - Craft Alliance is pleased to announce a new exhibition,
Material Content: Basketry Sculpture in the 21st Century, opening Friday,
March 18, with a reception from 5 - 8pm and a curator/artist talk the
following afternoon, March 19, at 1:30 pm. Both are free and open to
the public. The exhibition will be on view through May 15, and emphasizes
the marriage between construction and content in contemporary basket
art.
Artists featured in this exhibition use unexpected materials combined
with traditional basketry techniques, allowing the sculptural mass of
their work to define their message. As the exhibition curator, Kate Anderson
states, “Basketry processes, mostly repetitive and beautifully
revealing, are engaging. The techniques and materials invite examination,
while creating surface texture and a way to define space. These are the
beginnings for approaching content in the work.” This content varies
throughout the exhibition, whether it is social commentary, environmental
inspiration and concerns, autobiographical explorations, or spirituality.
These messages, combined with the range of materials and techniques,
create a diverse exhibition that explores the modernity of this art form
in the 21st century.
In conjunction with this exhibition, Craft Alliance is pleased to offer
a variety of weekend studios. Diane Banks will be conducting a workshop
entitled, “Content and Structure: Contemporary Baskets with Non-Traditional
Materials”, on Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd from 10am-4pm
both days. In addition, artist Leandra Spangler will hold a weekend studio
workshop entitled “Flat to Form: Paper as a Sculptural Medium” on
Saturday, April 16th, from 10am to 4pm, and Sunday, April 17th, from
10am-1pm. Both workshops will be held at Craft Alliance and registration
is required. Call 314-725-1177 ext. 325 for more information. A free
public lecture will be given by Jane Sauer entitled “Creating with
Intensity: A Public Lecture on Contemporary Baskets”. Sauer will
discuss the impact of passion and obsession on the creative process of
contemporary basket artists. The evening begins with a tour of the exhibition
and will convene in the Craft Alliance second floor studio for the lecture.
