Carrianne Hendrickson

In my work, I use the human figure in an illustrative manner to elicit certain psychological responses in the viewer.

I generally like to use naturalistic backgrounds and subject matter in my work since that is the environment I experienced as a child and young woman growing up in the very pastoral Finger Lakes region.

Some might say that my work, while having an innocence, also has a dark fringe. I do this because it is a symbolic reflection of the human condition as being both good and evil – thick with all of its many dark and mysterious facets

I make myself work a certain number of hours a week on the actual hands-on creation of my pieces. I work whether I’m inspired or not. If I don’t have a particular idea, I work anyway and let the ideas come. I don’t believe that inspiration is the motivator of art; I believe hard work is.

If you work hard enough, inspiration will come.

As explained by Michael J. Beam of the Castellini Art Museum, Hendrickson’s work is “rich in symbolism and lush with color, [it reflects] a sense of private devotion and personal exploration into mystical fairy tale ephemera. Although her works have a story book/nursery rhyme context, they often have dark undertones – suggestive of the dualities of human nature.

Good and evil, naiveté and jaded aspects of human nature find themselves played out in Hendrickson’s work. These narrative works… successfully twist the whole notion of what a fairy tale can be – where its inspiration is born – and where it can lead.”
