Craft Alliance is pleased to announce the award of a $30,000 grant from the Whitaker Foundation for its 2021 Artists-In-Residence program. The Program supports emerging and mid-career craft artists who want to develop their art in a collaborative, community-based arts center. Earlier this month, Craft Alliance welcomed its first two artists to the 2021 Whitaker Foundation Artists-In-Residence program: Douglas Dale and Sarah Knight.
Douglas Dale is a fiber artist who received their BA from Grinnell College in 2015 with honors, and spent time at Sorbonne Université in Paris, France. Dale has worked at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA; textile studio Carolyn Ray’s Inc. in Yonkers, NY; and product incubator FCTRY in Brooklyn. Dale’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, including Common Folk Gallery, North Adams, MA; Faulkner Gallery, Grinnell, IA; YoHo Artists Mill, Yonkers, NY; The Factory, Long Island City, NY; ARTSW Gallery, White Plains, NY; North Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks, MT; and the World Trade Center in Manhattan.
Sarah Knight is a mixed-media ceramicist and recent graduate from Washington University in St. Louis’ MFA program. Knight was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and attended Mills College for their BFA (2013). Their work has been exhibited regionally and online during the pandemic, including a recent digital show with Sculptor’s Alliance (New York, NY.) Their artistic influences include geology, queer morphology and their ever-growing rock collection.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Doug and Sarah to our new Artists-In-Residence studio,” says Stefanie Kirkland, Deputy Director of Craft Alliance. “For over a decade, our Artists-In-Residence program has encouraged artists to explore new ideas and further develop their studio practice in craft. The residents ignite our studios with energy and ideas, teach classes, work in our community programs and offer the public a window into the creative and professional lives of artists. We cannot wait to see what Doug and Sarah create.”
The work Dale and Knight create during their residency will be shown in an exhibition slated for July 2-August 7, 2021 in the Staenberg Gallery at Craft Alliance.
