Introduction to Blacksmithing

Introduction to Blacksmithing

April 7 - May 12

This course introduces the fundamental principles of Blacksmithing materials, tools, and techniques. Students will explore the essential skills necessary to hand-forged metal, such as hammer control, material handling, tapering, twisting, cutting, punching, and the like. Metal can be manipulated as a plastic material and offers enormous possibilities from traditional to contemporary designs. In this class, we will explore these possibilities and expand on your creative vocabulary. This class is intended for beginners and requires no prior experience. Projects will be designed to help students develop enough proficiency to become self-directed in their designs and production. If you have taken a previous Intro to Blacksmithing class at Craft Alliance this class will be offered as a continuation for you to hone your skills learned. Projects can be discussed and refined to match skill level or projects can be offered as well. Note that priority and attention will be given to the beginning students.

All blacksmithing classes and workshops are outdoors so dress appropriately: long sleeves, jacket, pants, socks and closed toe shoes and long hair pulled back. If class is cancelled due to inclement weather you will receive a notification via email.
